Getting Married in California

The Basics

How to Obtain a Marriage License in California - Los Angeles County

A California marriage license is needed to get married in California.  Marriage licenses in California are issued at the county clerk's office.  For an LA County marriage, you would need a Los Angeles County Marriage License.  I am however able to perform wedding ceremonies in all of California and the world.  To marry in a state or country outside of California, you must abide by the rules of that state or country. What's wonderful about California is that no blood test is required.

The License Application

You may obtain the application form online at http://www.lavote.net/marriage/mls

Payments can be made in cash, check, credit/debit card or money order made payable to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk or RRCC. If paying by check or credit card, valid identification ( e.g. driver's license of the signer) is required and must be presented at time of the request.

Both parties must be present together and produce "Proof of Identity" and age documents, such as a driver's license, passport or alien resident card. Photo and age verification is mandatory.  Documents that have expired will not be accepted.

Your license is good for 90 days.  If you have purchased it in advance and plan on getting married after the 90 day period, you will have to re-apply for another application.  If for some reason you forget to bring the license to the wedding and it has to be signed later, please make sure it is done before that date otherwise your marriage is not legal.

Current Cost

The cost of a confidential Los Angeles County marriage license is $85.00.  The cost of a public marriage license is $91.00
